Looking for more subtle way to celebrate this patriotic message? This fabric banner with a retro typeface makes a stylish statement in any room and would be a great gift for anyone who loves the Welsh language or the cultural history of this small, proud nation.
Dimensions: 12 by 13 inches (31 x 33cm)
Materials: 100% cotton fabric in dark, daffodil print with gold metallic accents with wool felt* lettering. An oak dowel is threaded through the top of the banner and an ivory satin ribbon is attached, so it's ready to hang.
Inspiration: (“Yma o hyd” in Welsh translates as “still here”)
The song ‘Yma o Hyd’ is probably known by every Welsh person as it’s been sung by sports fans and school pupils for over 40 years. Written by the famous Welsh folk musician, Dafydd Iwan, it covers the different ways Wales and the Welsh language have been threatened over the nation’s long history but the phrase ‘Yma o hyd’ is defiantly repeated throughout.
The sentiment of resilience and unity in the face of opposition resonates with many other people who have been marginalised in other countries but have come to make their home in Wales. Dafydd Iwan grew up in a neighbouring village so I remember his influence throughout my childhood and I have fond memories of belting this out full-hearted in my inter-house school Eisteddfod!
